Jalandhar, October  20

Due to the effective campaign of the district administration against burning of paddy straw, six Jalandhar villages including Bara Jodh Singh in Block Lohian Khaas,;Malli Nangal in Block Bhogpur; Mehsampur in Block Nakodar; Bolina Doaba in Jalandhar East; Jania Chahal in Lohian and Dasupur in Jalandhar West; have emerged as the torchbearers for the state by not burning paddy straw from the last couple of years, thereby contributing in making the state clean, green and pollution-free.

As per the data of Agriculture Department, Bara Jodh Singh and Dasupur villages, have not burnt paddy for the last four years, Bolina Doaba for the last three years, Malli Nangal, Jania Chahal and Mehsampur for  last two years.

Due to the contribution of these villages in emerging as a beacon light for other peers in effective straw management. The district administration has also felicitated the farmers of the villages during various training camps.

The farmers of these villages have been either mixing the straw in their fields to enhance its fertility or have been resorting to traditional method of decomposing it in couple of months to produce organic fertilizers, thereby again enhancing the productiveness of their soil.

Complementing these villages for showing way to their peers, the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Jalandhar, Varinder Kumar Sharma said these villages were rendering valuable service to the state and the coming generations by spreading awareness against paddy straw burning.

The DC said the burning of paddy straw was hardly a solution for the farm residue management as it ruins the health of soil.

He said due to the burning of paddy straw several major nutrients and other micro nutrients of soil were destroyed, adding that the burning of paddy straw produces several poisonous gases which have adverse effect on the human health.

The DC said instead of burning the paddy straw, the farmers must adopt effective methods for its management through latest techniques, adding that these farmers have proved that paddy straw management was not only viable but was good for both the health of the soil and that of the state.
