In the wake of warning of downpour and release of excessive water from the Bhakra dam, Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma today advised people residing near the Sutlej river and other low- lying areas to remain alert and refrain from moving near the river.

The Deputy Commissioner said 40,000 cusecs excessive water had been released from the dam today after the rise in water at the dam due to heavy rains in hilly areas.

He said the water was expected to reach the district by tomorrow. Besides, the Meteorological Department had also issued a warning of heavy rain, up to 120 mm, in the district during the next 72 hours.

The Deputy Commissioner said people residing on banks of rivers must avoid going near rivers and should take full precautions for safeguarding themselves. The enhanced water level in the Sutlej could pose a danger to low-lying areas along the river in the district, due to which safe evacuation of people and cattle was necessary.

Sharma said the administration was keeping a close watch on the entire situation, adding that they were already geared up to face any unforeseen eventuality arising out of the prevailing circumstances.

The DC said the SDMs of Phillaur, Nakodar and Shahkot had been put on high alert. Other officials of the district administration had also been issued necessary instructions to tackle the emergent situation efficaciously. He said officers had also been asked to not to leave their headquarters in any case.

Sharma said however, there was no need to panic as the administration was fully at their disposal.
