2 drug peddlers arrested

Continuing its drive against drug smugglers, the Jalandhar rural police have arrested two drug peddlers and recovered one quintal of poppy husk and 2.550 kg of opium from their possession.

The suspects have been identified as Kamaldeep Singh (40) of Haripur village in Hoshiarpur and Rohit Kumar (32) of Rasoia village in Jharkhand. Kamaldeep has already facing a drug case registered against him on July 1, 2017, when 52 kg of poppy husk was seized from him. Later, he was released on bail.

Addressing mediapersons, Senior Superintendent of Police Navjot Singh Mahal said SI Raghubir Singh from the Maqsudan police station was leading a checking team at the Bidhipur railway crossing and received a tip-off that the two suspects were waiting for a customer near bushes at the Amanatpur bus stop on a scooter (bearing registration number PB07-AZ-6761).

Mahal said following the tip-off, the police party raided the spot and found both sitting on sacks and apprehended them.

He said Kartarpur DSP Ranjit Singh also reached the spot and two sacks, which they were carrying, were checked and the contraband was seized.

Mahal said a case had been registered against them at the Maqsudan police station and both would be taken on police remand for interrogation regarding their link-ups.

The SSP said since the imposition of the model code of conduct on March 10, the rural police have arrested 183 male and 20 female drug peddlers and recovered 19 kg of opium, 256 of kg poppy husk, 11 kg of heroin, 567 gm of narcotics powder, 1,098 injections, 24,880 tablets, 19,181 capsules, 1 kg of ganja, 40 gm of smack and 23 kg of charas.
