On a complaint lodged by Shishpal Singh, a resident of Pandhwa village, the Phagwara police have registered a case under section 420, 406, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC against Jalandhar residents Jatinder Singh Walia and his wife Rachna on the charges of duping the complainant of Rs 39 lakh.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Sandeep Malik told this correspondent here on Thursday evening that the accused couple were family friends of Shishpal.
The complainant had stated that the accused took Rs 16.30 lakh from him on March 29, 2014, as they were in a financial crisis.
He said the couple then demanded Rs 23 lakh more, but when he hesitated to give more money to them, they requested him to take his Fortuner car worth Rs 20 lakh and assured him to pay back on January 6 this year.
The complainant said he was shocked when staff of State Bank of India, Kapurthala branch, came to him to recover loan of Rs 23 lakh. He was told that the NOC of the car given to him was forged.
The complainant approached accused Rajni, who gave him three cheques for Rs 23 lakh and took cash of Rs 3 lakh from him.
Interestingly, all three cheques were dishonoured by Vijay Bank of Jalandhar, said ASP Malik. No arrest has been made so for.
