As part of the ongoing Navratra festival, the 14th Mission Dosti International Indian Style Kushti (Mahadangal) Championship will begin at the sports stadium in Katra on Tuesday.
The sporting event will be organised under the auspices of the Navratra festival committee and in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, state tourism department, J&K State Sports Council, J&K Police, NHPC, J&K Bank, Youth Services and Sports, Jamkash Vehicleades Private Limited, district administration, CRPF, LIC, HDFC Bank, OBC Bank and Janta Katra.
Shiv Kumar Sharma, treasurer, Indian Style Wrestling Association of India, said wrestlers from Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia and Russia, along with Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Maharashtra, Railway, J&K Police and the state had already confirmed their participation. He said women wrestlers from Haryana and Delhi were also participating in the championship.
Meanwhile, Rodica Mariya Yasika, head, United World Wrestling, said the association had adopted the traditional Indian style wrestling and hoped that many more events would be organised across the country in future to popularise this traditional game. — TNS
