Srinagar, October 20

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working on the widening of Zojila upper alignment near Captain Morh to improve the connectivity between the Ladakh region and the country.

“We are doing the formation work on the upper alignment of Zojila. There are a couple of choke points which we are addressing in a methodological manner for the smooth flow of traffic,” said BRO Engineer Incharge, Zojila, Captain Niraj Kumar Singh.

He said the most critical among them is the hard rock portion of Zojila above Captain Morh, which was 400-m-long with fragmented rock strata.

“Such strata is not witnessed in any other road alignments in the state posing a huge challenge in the road formation,” he said .

Zojila is the gateway to the Ladakh region and serves its lifeline.

Traversing through the highest altitude in Central Kashmir’s Sonamarg, Zojila’s road-widening, construction and maintenance is one of the most arduous and cumbersome exercises.

The BRO works against all odds to keep open the road stretch at the altitude of 11,649 ft as the pass, the second highest after Fotula on the strategic Srinagar-Leh highway.
