A wildlife department team on Tuesday rescued two leopard cubs which were caught in a ‘leg-hold trap’ in a forest area at Gurdhan village near Rajouri town.

Early morning, a few locals noticed the cubs with their legs caught in the trap. They informed soldiers of a nearby Army unit.

The Army took up the matter with wildlife officials and a team was rushed to rescue the cubs.

“One of the cubs received injuries and was treated at the Army’s veterinary hospital. It is still under observation while the other was immediately freed in the forest so that the mother leopard does not intrude into human habitations in search of the cubs,” said Mushtaq Choudhary, wildlife warden.

He said the department had approached the police to lodge an FIR against unknown persons who had fixed the trap in the forest area.

“Both cubs are around four months old and in good health. The second cub will also be released tonight after treatment,” he added.
