A student from Targain village in Rajouri district died under suspicious conditions, reportedly after he was taken into custody by the police as his car hit an old pedestrian in Chandigarh on Thursday.

Family sources said Syed Naheem Shah (21) was a II-year student of BSc nursing in a local medical institution. Media reports said after hitting a pedestrian, Naheem lost control over the car and was injured.

“A mob gathered on the spot and reportedly thrashed Naheem. When taken into custody by the police, he was complaining about an injury on the head. What happened to him later, we don’t know,” said Zahid Hussain, Naheem’s cousin.

Around 11 am on Thursday, his family was informed about his accident and Naheem died around 1 pm, Zahid said.

“Whether Naheem died due to police negligence or due to absence of immediate medical help, that is a matter of investigation. Five members of the family have left for Chandigarh to bring back his mortal remains,” he added.

People at Targain expressed resentment over Naheem’s death and demanded an impartial inquiry. They claimed he was murdered.
