Sikhs observe martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev

The martyrdom anniversary of Guru Arjan Dev was observed in the Kashmir valley on Friday.

Satpal Singh, president of Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Budgam, said besides recitation of shabad kirtan, langar was organised at several gurdwaras while devotees prayed throughout the course of the day. He said they specially prayed for peace in the Valley at the gurdwara located at Barzulla, Baghat. He said preachers from Darbar Sahib, Amritsar, also delivered sermons at Barzulla.

Manjeet Singh, a devotee, said Guru Arjan Dev was martyred during the Mughal rule and was remembered as ‘shaheedon ke sartaj’ by the devotees. He said the fifth Guru was also the first martyr of the Sikh faith. He said the 413th martyrdom anniversary of the fifth Sikh guru was observed on Friday.

Meanwhile, the ‘shaheedi diwas’ of Guru Arjan Dev was observed by the Sikh community in Jammu as well. The main function was organised by the management committee of Gurdwara Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Domana, under the patronage of Sant Tejwant Singh, chairman, Sant Pura Dana Charitable Trust.

A large number of devotees from all over Jammu attended the programme. Besides, local ragis like Bhai Sahib Bhai Ravinder Singh, Bhai Sahib Bhai Parvinder Singh and ragi jatha of Bhai Kulvinder Singh took part in the programme.
