Srinagar, July 8

Jammu and Kashmir Police have picked a university student for questioning in the stabbing of a girl from a minority community in south Kashmir’s Tral area of Pulwama district on July 2.

Police sources said the girl from the minority community had named a student of Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipora, as a suspect in the stabbing incident.

“We have picked up the suspect and he is being questioned,” a police officer said.

The girl, herself a student of IUST, Awantipora, had named three male and a girl classmate for “forcing her to convert” last month.

However, an internal probe by IUST into “forcible conversion” has already been dismissed it as a “lighter joking” by her classmates.

The police is also looking into the relation between the “stabbing incident” and claims of “ forced conversion”.

J&K Director General of Police SP Vaid also tweeted about the incident.

“Case registered. Suspect has been identified and being questioned,” Vaid tweeted.
