Anantnag, July 19

Militants gunned down the personal security officer (PSO) of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Sajad Mufti in the Bijbehara area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district today.

“Sajad Mufti (former CM Mehbooba Mufti’s cousin) was offering Friday prayers in the mosque, while his PSO Farooq Ahmad Mir was standing guard outside. The militants shot Mir in the chest from a very close range,” a senior police official said. After the attack, the militants decamped with the service rifle of Mir, a resident of Khiram village in Bijbehara.

The injured policeman was evacuated to the sub-district hospital where he was declared “brought dead”.

The attack, as per police reports, took place around 1.30 pm in Baba Mohalla of Bijbehara. The spot is less than 50m from the ancestral home of the Muftis. This is the second such incident in less than a week.

On July 14, the security guard of a National Conference (NC) leader was shot dead in the Hillar area of Anantnag district. — OC
