Programme to spread awareness on water conservation held

To spread awareness on water conservation a special programme was held at Satwari Cantt on Tuesday as collective drive by the Army, Sainik Welfare Department and Ex-Serviceman League.

The Centre has established the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The water conservation programme is being run by the Communication and Capacity Development Unit (CCDU) under the Department of PHE in J&K.

The programme aims at educating schoolchildren and teachers on the problem of water crisis and need to spread awareness amongst the citizens.

Director, Sainik Welfare Department, Brig Harcharan Singh introduced the topic to the audience through facts on water availability and future crisis due to water shortage. 

 Maj Gen GS Jamwal, president, J&K Ex-Serviceman League, brought out five specific intervention areas to include water conservation, renovation of water bodies, recharging of borewell, watershed development and afforestation. 

He stressed upon the need to develop a close coordination between various government agencies and NGOs to ensure that the countrywide campaign of Jal Shakti Abhiyan is made a success. 

 As per study of 2017, the country has 256 districts with water-stressed blocks. A coordinated efforts and flow of information to save water is likely to improve the situation in near future.
