Jammu, March 8

First Lady Usha Vohra participated in a function organised by the J&K Police for celebrating the International Women’s Day in Jammu this evening.

She lauded the cultural programme, comprising songs, poem recitation, skits and folk dances, besides the presentations made by lady officers Anita Sharma and Sargun Shukla on the “Role of women police in J&K” and “Legal provisions/laws provided for the protection/empowerment of women”, respectively.

Observing that ensuring the safety of women was a worldwide concern, the First Lady emphasised the need to make women feel safe and secure, for which the police have to play a crucial role.

She said despite constitutionally and legally guaranteed rights and privileges relating to gender parity, a lot needed to be done to empower women. She said a change in the mindset had to be brought about to ensure that women are respected and treated fairly in every walk of life.

She launched the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Women Safety App and felicitated wives of police martyrs and women police officer achievers on the occasion.

Earlier, Director General of Police SP Vaid, too, spoke about the need to make women feel safe.
