Kargil highway reopens after 5 months

The Kargil-Zanskar highway was reopened for traffic on Sunday after remaining closed for nearly five months due to heavy snowfall.

Zanskar Executive Councillor Tseng Sonam along with Kargil Deputy Commissioner Haji Gulzar Hussain and Kargil Senior Superintendent of Police Tsering Gyalpo declared the road open by flagging off vehicles towards Zanskar at a function held at Latomarpo in Penzila.

Commanding Officer of the 72 Border Road Task Force Col RL Manoj, officers of the police and civil administration, besides mediapersons were present on the occasion.

Passenger vehicles and trucks carrying petrol, diesel and essentials were allowed to move towards Zanskar.

The highway was thrown open for traffic for the first time in March.

Meanwhile, the Zanskar Executive Councillor, Kargil DC and the Kargil SSP interacted with the snow-clearance team. While congratulating the team, they hailed the tireless efforts of the bulldozer operators, engineers and labourers of the mechanical divisions of Kargil and Zanskar for clearing the 234-km-long highway in record time.
