JKBOSE Class XII: Girls outshine boys again

In a neck-and-neck contest, girl students continued to maintain their lead in the Class XII examination for the summer zone, declared by the J&K Board of School Education (JKBOSE) here late Wednesday evening.

In all, 54 students, including 29 girls and 25 boys, shared the first 30 positions in three major streams (10 each in a stream) including faculty of arts, science and commerce.

The overall pass percentage stood at 55 per cent, including 59 per cent girls and 50 per cent boys. Of the total 37,858 candidates that appeared in the examination, 20,646 qualified the exams.

At least 2,460 students failed in the examination while 14,572 have got a reappear in one or more subjects. A total of 5,247 students secured distinction (75 per cent or above marks) while 8,944 candidates secured the first division (60 per cent or above marks).

In science stream, a total of 26 students, comprising 15 boys and 11 girls, shared the top 10 positions. Japleen Kour of Government Higher Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, clinched the first position in science stream by securing 98.2 per cent marks. Aryan Gupta of SP Higher Secondary School, Exchange Road, and Anshika Aggarwal of Aryan Public Senior Secondary School, RS Pura, bagged the second and the third positions by securing 97.6 per cent and 97.4 per cent marks, respectively.

In commerce stream, a total of 12 students, comprising seven boys and five girls, shared the top 10 positions. Three students Shubam Gupta, Karan Raj Gupta and Mohd Eteeq of SP Higher Secondary School, Exchange Road, clinched the first, second and third positions by securing 97.4 per cent, 96.2 per cent and 95.8 per cent marks, respectively.

In arts stream, 16 students, including 13 girls and three boys, shared the top 10 positions. Janvi Gupta of Shiksha Niketan Higher Secondary School, Jeevan Nagar, bagged the top position with 97.3 per cent marks while Gagan Parihar of Vijay Higher Secondary School, Udhampur, and Riya Kumari of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Nowabad, shared the second position by securing 97 per cent marks. The third position in the stream was bagged by Shagun Mahajan of SP Higher Secondary School, Exchange Road, who secured 96.6 per cent marks.

In home science, all six positions were clinched by the students of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Mubarak Mandi. Ananya Khajuria of the school secured 92.6 per cent marks to clinch the first position followed by Mahwish Jain, who secured 81.4 per cent.

A total of 87 candidates remained absent in the examination while there were 2,469 disputed eligibility cases. A total of three candidates were disqualified from the examination while the examination of 28 candidates was cancelled.

In the last three years too, girls had scored over boys.

In 2017, of the total 64 positions, girls had secured 44 while boys claimed just 20 positions in science, arts and commerce streams. A total of 38,895 students were enrolled for the examination and the i.e. 19,906 students.

In 2016, a total of 42,234 aspirants had appeared in the exams. The overall pass percentage was 49 per cent. Of the total 100 positions, girls had secured 69 positions while boys claimed 31 positions in science, arts, commerce and home science streams.

In 2015, at least 62 positions were claimed by girls and 24 by boys in the four streams. Of 40,580 students who had taken the examination, the total pass percentage was 49 per cent.
