Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, student leader from the state Neeraj Kundan has been appointed the national president of the National Students Union of India (NSUI).

He assumed office in New Delhi on Tuesday and got the blessings of Congress president Rahul Gandhi as well.

Before Kundan, Feroz Khan from Ramban district was the national president of the NSUI from March 2017-August 2018 but had resigned after allegations were levelled against him.

Neeraj was the state president of the NSUI in J&K for four years from 2014-17 and was made the in charge of the NSUI unit of Punjab University, where due to his efforts, the party was able to win the PU elections after three years.

He was also made the in charge of Rajasthan, where he was successful in winning the university elections. During the Rajasthan Assembly elections, Neeraj was able to mobilise students and youth to get votes for the Congress.

As the Lok Sabha elections are around the corner, Neeraj’s biggest challenge would be to improve the Congress’ image among students.

Talking to The Tribune after assuming office, Neeraj said: “It is an honour for me to be elected to the office. My priority will be to take Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s programme and policies to students and strengthen the NSUI all over (the country).”

“Ahead of the LS elections, my job is to expose the BJP’s propaganda among students. This government is trying to saffronise every institution in the country and has not been able to deliver on its promises. Modi government had promised 2 crore jobs every year but it remained a hollow slogan,” Neeraj said.
