Srinagar, February 10

Valley skier Bilal Ahmad Sheikh has won a silver medal at the recently concluded National Senior Ski Championship in Manali.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, Winter Games Association of J&K general secretary Muhammad Yusuf said Bilal won the medal in newly introduced ‘cross ski event’, which is considered to be the toughest event in alpine skiing.

“In the first trial run, Bilal led the race all through the course but in the final he got the second position. Bilal is an aggressive skier who plays better on rough terrains. It was Bilal’s first medal in any national championship, though he has participated in many earlier,” he said. Meanwhile, the J&K junior ski team has joined the Indian contingent at Sakhlin, Russia. “They took part in the inaugural ceremony on Saturday. The competitions started on Sunday,” said Muhammad Yusuf, adding that the WGAJK officials called on the Secretary Youth Services and Secretary Sports Council where they requested them to sponsor the proposed National Junior Championship in March this year. — TNS
