Doda, March 27

Irked over the step-motherly treatment extended to them by successive regimes, residents of Bharat, Udhyanpur and Dali areas of Doda district have decided to cast their vote to None of the Above (NOTA) in the upcoming Parliamentary elections.

They are hoping that their collective protest will help focus political attention on their plight as they are feeling alienated since Independence. For the population of over 1 lakh in nine panchayats, Bharat-Bagal tehsil has a single higher secondary school.

Udhyanpur sarpanch Shabir Naik said “Even after 70 years of Independence, we have no higher secondary school in our block. Girl students are forced to travel 27 km to reach a school in Ghat.”

“Doda-Bharat road is another problem for inhabitants as many elections were fought on this issue but nothing has been done in this regard,” Mohammed Shafi Magray, another sarpanch, said.—OC
