The Delhi Police’s special cell arrested an operative of Hizbul Mujahideen, Ansar Ul Haq (28), a resident of Pulwama district, from the Delhi IGI Airport as he was trying to flee to Srinagar.

The apprehended terrorist was wanted in the murder of Sub Inspector (SI) Imtiyaz Ahmad Mir, intelligence officer of Jammu and Kashmir Police’s CID branch, said DCP Pramod Singh Kushwah (special cell).

On October 28, the bullet-riddled body of 30-year-old Sub Inspector Imtiyaz Ahmad Mir was found in the Chewa Kalan area in Pulwama district. Mir, who was on his way home in his car, was reportedly abducted by terrorists and killed, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) said.

The special cell team looked out for accused Ansar Ul Haq at various possible hideouts in and around Delhi.

In the meanwhile, it came to fore that the accused was changing his hideouts and had shifted to Mumbai and then to Bengaluru and other nearby areas.

On Tuesday, a specific input was received that Haq would come to the Delhi airport from Bangalore to go to Srinagar, he said.

A trap was laid and he was apprehended at Terminal 3, the DCP said.

During the interrogation, Haq said he was in regular contact with other Hizbul Mujahideen militants like Liyakat, Shau Cable, Shahid Ahmad Baba, Zahid Tiger and Zahur. He said he passed information to militants about the movements of security forces and local police officers.

He confessed to his involvement in the killing of the Sub Inspector by roping in his girlfriend as she was an acquaintance of the victim, the Deputy Commissioner of Police added.
