Leh, June17

To solve the water crisis in the Phey village of Leh district, the damaged irrigation headwork of the village has been converted into a concrete bundh to prevent leakage.

It was constructed by a local NGO to address the water scarcity problem by strengthening the irrigation infrastructure. The headworks is like a temporary fencing near the village stream through which the water is channelled for irrigation.

Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, Dorjey Motup inaugurated it at a function on Saturday. Appreciating the initiative, Tsering Motup, the village head, said, “We have been facing acute shortage of water due to the poorly constructed headworks, especially in summer which is the only crop season. The headwork got washed away and needed restoration every alternate day.” — OC
