Govt issues pre-evacuation plan as fresh rain lashes Valley

After fresh spell of rainfall in the Valley, the district administration here has issued a pre-evacuation plan for the residents of localities which were worst hit by the September floods last year.

The flood fear resurfaced in Kashmir on Wednesday after fresh rain in the Valley.

MeT officials said rainfall, which began last night and was expected to continue for the next two days, can cause surge in the Jhelum and its tributaries.

The plan has appealed people to shift to different community halls located in safer places in case the need arises. These community centres had been converted into relief camps in the wake of floods in the city.

Marriage halls and community centres situated in the safer places like Rawalpora, Sanat Nagar, and Chanapora have been turned into relief camps for residents of Kursu Raj Bagh, Jawahar Nagar, Lal Mandi and adjoining localities, which are situated near the Jhelum and face a potential flood threat.

The residents of areas like Maisuma, Gawkadal, Sheikh Bagh, Court Road, Chinar Bagh have been advised to shift to community facilitation centre at Bghwanpora and Basant Bagh in case of floods.

The government has also issued contact numbers of officials who will facilitate people in reaching the respective relief camps. The evacuation plan for Natipora, Nowgam has also been issued by the officials.

Officials of the district administration said the transportation facility for the people would be available at the respective evacuation points. “Boarding and lodging facility will be provided at the relief camps,” an official said.
