The Army nabbed two militants from a vehicle in the Mendhar area of Poonch district on Wednesday and recovered two AK-56 rifles from them.

Sources said acting on a specific input, the Army established a checkpoint at Jaranwali Gali around 4 pm. They said during checking of a Chevrolet Tavera, the Army arrested two militants who were carrying guns.

“The vehicle was on its way to Mendhar from Jaranwali when it was stopped by the Army. The two militants have been identified as Shabir Ahmed and Muhammad Aqib, both residents of Kakapora, Pulwama,” said a source.

The Army also recovered two magazines from the possession of the militants.

Meanwhile, two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were arrested from the Awantipora area of Pulwama district on Tuesday evening, the police said. Arms and ammunition were recovered from them.

The militants have been identified as Jan Muhammad Sheikh and Nasir-ul-Islam, both residents of Pulwama district.

The police said there were prior inputs regarding the movement of the militants in the Panzgam area, falling within the jurisdiction of Awantipora police district.

“Acting on a lead, a checkpoint was established near the Panzgam railway station to intercept the militants,” a senior police officer said, adding that the duo was intercepted by the police around 9.30 pm.

He said the police had recovered UBGL grenades, ammunition and other material from the two ultras.

“They have been arrested and a case has been filed. Investigation has been started into the matter and they are being interrogated,” the officer said. He said the police were expecting vital leads from them.
