Kathua, July 13

In a shocking incident, an elderly couple was brutally murdered by their grandson in Kathua town on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Chand Ram, 82, and his wife, Sanjogta Devi, 75, residents of Ward No. 1 in Kathua.

The accused, identified as Sahil, 20, has been arrested. He had taken refuge at a relative’s house after committing the crime.

The police said Sahil allegedly attacked his grandparents with a blunt object, killing them on the spot. The incident took place on Friday night but came to light in the wee hours of Saturday after family members found the elderly couple dead. They raised an alarm and informed the police.

While the family members claimed that the youth was under the influence of some ‘evil powers’, police sources said the preliminary reports suggested that the boy was ‘mentally unsound’. They said it was premature to comment at this stage.

The youth was working as a carpenter in Manali and had come home last week. Family sources said Sahil had also attacked his parents but they managed to escape. — OC
