A notorious smuggler was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) for his alleged involvement in smuggling of narcotics in Kathua district, police said on Thursday.

The accused, Jeevan Kumar alias Jeeva, is a resident of Chak Drab Khan village of Kathua and has a number of cases under the Excise and NDPS Act registered against him in the district, they said.

A dossier for his detention was submitted by the Kathua SSP to the District Magistrate, who then issued the order for his detention.

“His detention will surely help send across a strong message to all drug peddlers that the Kathua police will not spare any person involved in the trade of drugs,” Shridar Patil, Senior Superintendent of Police, Kathua, said.

The accused has been sent to Kot Bhalwal Central Jail in Jammu. —OC
