Srinagar, August 18

Despite a ban, vehicles in Srinagar continue to ferry loose construction material without covering it.

The state government had last month banned uncovered ferrying of construction material.

It had asked transporters to cover the material with tarpaulins or canopies during the transportation process.

The government had warned that the violators would be dealt with strictly.

“Despite a ban, one can see tippers and other vehicles carrying building material uncovered, not only during the night but also during broad daylight,” said Parvaiz Ahmed, a resident of uptown locality in Srinagar. “The uncovered material in vehicles leads to air pollution and sometimes some material falls off the vehicle leading to accidents,” he said.

Parvaiz sought strict implementation of the government directions.

The government had also put a ban on the entry of trucks into the city during the day as they caused traffic jams.

Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner Shafqat Khan said the government had banned ferrying of loose construction material on the directions of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

A senior government official said various agencies, including Traffic Police, Regional Transport Officer, Kashmir, and SMC, had been asked to ensure that the building material was not ferried uncovered.
