Jammu, June 23

In a face-saving exercise, Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh today invited a delegation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) for a meeting to discuss Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The chamber had sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention and questioned the “silence of the state BJP” in the implementation of the single tax regime in J&K.

Though the entire India will roll out the GST from July 1, total confusion prevails in J&K as the PDP-BJP coalition has succumbed to pressure of trade bodies in the Valley, who are opposing its implementation citing special status of the state under Article 370.

“Deputy Chief Minister assured us that the government is serious on the implementation of the GST and the needful shall be done at the earliest. We conveyed our view that the non-implementation of the single tax system will be detrimental to the interests of business community in the state and would bring the entire trade and industrial sector to a standstill,” said CCI president Rakesh Gupta. — TNS
