Central varsity students continue protest, demand release of pupil

Protesting students of the Central University of Kashmir on Tuesday confined Vice Chancellor Prof Mehraj-ud-din Mir to his office, demanding the release of a student who has been booked by the police in a militancy-related incident.

The students have boycotted their classes since Saturday in protest. To prevent any law and order situation, the university has suspended classes till November 16.

“We tried to pacify the students and have taken up the issue with the authorities. They have promised us that they will free the student if he is not found involved in any militant activity. The students on Tuesday confined me in my office from morning till 5 pm. To prevent any such situation, we have suspended the classes for three days on two campuses,” the Vice Chancellor said.

Two students Suhail Ahmad, a resident of Shopian, and Muhammad Ismail, a resident of Baramulla, were detained by the police on November 9 night.

Police officers said Ismail was released a day ago, while Suhail had been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for “harbouring militants”.

The police said Suhail had been remanded in custody till November 15.
