Srinagar, September 26

Tension flared up in north Kashmir when a Border Security Force (BSF) vehicle was torched on Thursday evening after it met with an accident, which left three people, including a policeman and two women, injured.

The police said the accident took place between Buchoo and Haigam villages along the Srinagar-Baramulla highway, 35 from here, when a BSF truck hit a private car.

“A policeman in civvies was driving the car and after the accident it skidded off the road leading to injuries to all three occupants. Locals rushed to the spot and damaged the BSF vehicle before setting it ablaze,” a police officer in north Kashmir said. The BSF men in the vehicle managed to escape from the spot in another vehicle which was escorting it.

The injured were shifted to hospital, where the condition of all the three is stated to be critical. Additional forces were rushed to the area to maintain law and order.

A senior police officer said the situation had been brought under control.

The incident took place as Valley continues to observe a shutdown after the scrapping of Article 370 on August 5. The tension mounted in Kashmir on Thursday ahead of addresses by the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan at the United National General Assembly in New York. A late evening torch protest was held at Aanchar Soura in city outskirts. The shops and business establishments continued to remain shut for the 53rd consecutive day.
