Srinagar, October 15

Even as the BJP said today that the upcoming Block Development Council (BDC) elections would give birth to new leaders in the Kashmir valley, the party is aiming for a clean sweep amid boycott by other parties.

“For the first time in the history of J&K, we are holding elections to the second tier of panchayats. Other parties did not want the conduct of these elections....this is a step taken to change the destiny of villages and bring development. New leaders will emerge once these elections conclude. We want development. The people should feel the difference,” BJP national vice-president and incharge of J&K Affairs Avinash Rai Khanna said while addressing a convention of panchs at Khanbal in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The BJP has already formed a team of senior party leaders to ensure a good show in the elections that are being held on October 24 and is the only party seen doing poll-related activities on ground. — TNS
