In the wake of attacks on Kashmiris in parts of the country, some unidentified miscreants allegedly tried to create communal tension in Mendhar town in Poonch district by putting two shops and two cars on fire late on Friday night.

The police later found out that the cars were owned by members of the majority community.

“The attempt to raise tension in the area by setting shops and cars afire was made by miscreants. It was foiled by people and policemen who rushed to the spot and doused the fire,” said Neeraj Kumar, SDPO, Mendhar.

Denying any communal tension after the incident, he said, “The matter was discussed in a joint meeting of representatives from both the communities held on Saturday. The police have assured them regarding the arrest of the miscreants at the earliest.”

A case under Section 435, RPC, has been registered against the unidentified miscreants and the police have started an investigation. Section 144 of the CrPC was also imposed in the town.

Sources said one shop and one car were fully damaged while the second shop and car were partially damaged.

The meeting reviewed the situation on the Line of Control (LoC) and discussed measures to be taken in case of migration from border villages, early completion of bunkers and availability of adequate essentials at migrant camps.
