President of the J&K Peoples' Movement (JKPM) Shah Faesal today urged the government to exempt vehicles carrying perishable items such as vegetables, fruits, poultry and livestock from the bi-weekly national highway traffic ban.

In a statement, Faesal said restrictions on the movement of vehicles carrying perishable items had been causing huge losses to small traders. He alleged that the administration seemed to be in deep slumber to pay heed to the pleas of the affected people.

"I received a call last evening that a vehicle carrying livestock has been stuck on the highway for the last two days. There is a shortage of fodder and animals are about to die due to hunger," said Faesal.

He said: "A ban on the movement of civilian traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway is undemocratic and anti-people, and causing inconvenience to all sections of society."
