In an unprecedented move to inculcate administrative discipline and accountability, the state on Thursday cancelled appointments of more than 400 medical officers.

The administration had appointed several medical officers in January this year but 437 of them did not join their duties. The government took a serious note of it and cancelled their appointment forthwith. It has also issued notices to 79 medical officers to join their duties within seven days.

“It is keeping in tune with the Governor Satya Pal Malik’s promise of being tough on erring employees and especially those who are supposed to work in public service departments,” a senior official told The Tribune. “Rural health is the prime concern for the government,” he added.

Earlier, on the recommendations of the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, the date of joining for medical officers was extended by the department due to inclement weather conditions prevailing in the state, wherein it was categorically mentioned that in case the newly appointed medical officers failed to join at their respective place of postings within the stipulated period of time, their appointments shall be deemed to  have been cancelled ab initio and candidates from the waiting list shall be considered for appointment, without any further notice.

Meanwhile, the department issued a notice giving a final chance to the 79 medical officers who had submitted their joining reports but were not physically continuing at their respective place of postings.

As per the notice, these medical officers were told to resume their duties within a period of seven days from the date of issuance of the notice, failing which they shall be deemed to have been discharged from the probation in pursuance of  the J&K Classification, Control and Appeal Rules, 1956.
