4 militants, jawan killed in encounter in Shopian district of J&K

SRINAGAR: Four militants and an Army jawan were killed in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday, officials said. Three soldiers, including two para commandos, were injured.

Four militants and an Army jawan were killed in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday, officials said. Three soldiers, including two para commandos, were injured in the gunfight.

The encounter erupted during a cordon and search operation at Nadigam village when joint teams of police, Army and CRPF were carrying out searches in the area on the basis of specific information about the presence of militants.

“In the gunfight that followed four militants were killed,” a defence official said. “We also lost one soldier in the gunfight,” he added.

The slain Army para commando has been identified as Vijay Kumar, a resident of Sagwan village in Bhiwani, Haryana.

The slain militants were associated with Hizbul Mujahideen and have been identified as Abid Nazir Chopan of Padarpora, Basharat Nengroo of Chotigam Shopian, Mehraj-ud-Din Najar of Drawni and Malik Zada Inam-ul-Haq of Mantujan Shopian.
