Two guards of Jammu and Kashmir Bank were shot dead and three others injured when militants opened fire on a cash van in south Kashmir’s Shopian district today.  There was no cash in the vehicle, a bank official said.

This is the second such ambush on a cash van of the bank. On May 1,  five policemen and two guards were shot dead by militants at Pumbai village in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

The cash van, a Scorpio (JK-01-M-3941) belonging to the Pulwama zonal office, was targeted around 2.30 pm at Poju village in the Kralcheck area, 12 km from Shopian.

The deceased were identified as Tariq Ahmad from Pulwama and Mushtaq Ahmad from Anantnag. The condition of the van driver was stable. A search was on to nab the attackers, police said.

“The vehicle was returning to the office after delivering cash at a branch in Shopian,” a bank official said. The police said it overturned as it came under heavy fire.
