Srinagar, November 24

Eleven cellphones were found in the possession of several mainstream leaders under detention at the MLA Hostel here, the police said on Sunday.

The search operation was conducted on Saturday evening as per the Jail Manual following inputs on the use of mobiles by detainees inside the hostel which has been turned into a sub-jail, a police official said. “Eleven mobile phones were recovered from the hostel during the search,” the official said, adding that investigations were on to determine how the phones had reached inside the sub-jail. At least 36 politicians, shifted from the Centaur Hotel last week, have been detained at the MLA Hostel.

The searches were carried out around 4 pm, two hours after families of the detained politicians came to visit them. Earlier on Saturday, those detained held a joint protest on the premises of the hostel, alleging harassment of their kin.  — PTI
