Srinagar, July 16

In the biggest-ever mass marriage in Kashmir, 105 couples belonging to the underprivileged section, from various districts of the Valley have tied knot at a simple but impressive ceremony here.

Hundreds of people attended the ceremony which was arranged by a religious and social organisation, Jaffri Council, at Amar Singh Club here on Sunday.

The council has previously also held such functions but this year’s was the biggest so far.

In 2015, the council facilitated the marriage of 38 couples from economically weaker sections of society. In 2016, 70 couples were married at a mass event and in 2017 the number was 75.

The couples register themselves with the organisation and after verifying their credentials and other details, the council starts arrangements for their marriage.

“The couples are from economically weaker sections (EWS). We verify their credentials and antecedents to find out whether they really deserve monetary and social support or not. Once we find that they do, the organisation starts arrangements for their marriage,” secretary, Jaffri Council, Gulam Rasool, said.

He said these functions are sponsored by donors who do not wish to be named. Using the donation money, the council takes care of marriage dresses, ornaments for the brides and other such things. PTI
