The local administration swung into action to check frequent use of banned polythene bags and challaned seven shopkeepers and vendors for littering and using polythene carry bags. A team led by SDM Surinder Thakur inspected premises of various shops and vends at Jassur near here on Thursday.

The Tribune had carried news published in these columns on September 19 highlighting the frequent use of polythene carry bags with impunity in Nurpur and its surrounding areas despite a ban enforced on January 1, 1999, by then PK Dhumal government in the state.

The team comprising SHO, Block Development Officer and Executive Officer, Nurpur, the municipal council challaned seven shopkeepers and vendors. The offenders were fined Rs 7,000. In the wholesale vegetable market of Jassur, big poly bags packed with vegetables were being brought from Punjab where there is no ban on its use. The SDM warned the shopkeepers against using any type of polythene bags.

The team also cleared service lane on the Pathankot- Mandi national highway at Jassur by removing encroachments on the lane and checked illegal parking on it.
