Solan, January 19

A team of officials from the quality control wing of the Public Works Department (PWD) today inspected the 19-km stretch of Jangeshu-Sukki Johri Road and took samples of the material used in the road.

The inspection follows a news report appearing in these columns yesterday where the poor condition of the road was highlighted.

Executive Engineer, Quality Control, Kulbir Thakur, who visited the site today, said out of the 29.4 km Parwanoo-Jangeshu-Kasauli-Suki Johri road which was supposed to be repaired, work on only 19-km had been undertaken.

This stretch was inspected today and samples from various sites have been collected which would be examined in the lab to ascertain if the due quality has been maintained or not. He said a report would be submitted to the senior officials after receipt of land reports and the road had been physically examined.

The National Highways Authority of India had granted Rs 18 crore to the PWD to strengthen 29.4-km Parwanoo-Jangeshu-Kasauli-Dharampur road, 13-km Kamli-Bhojnagar road and 14-km Chakki-Bhojnagar road.

These roads are supposed to be developed as alternate roads for the passage of vehicles till the Parwanoo-Solan stretch of National Highway-22 was being four-laned. With sub-standard execution of work on the Parwanoo-Jangeshu-Kasauli-Suki Johri Road potholes had developed days after the metalling work was undertaken.

Since some work on the Garkhal-Sukhi Johri stretch had been undertaken in the inclement weather in November, the road condition had worsened within days.
