Products with GI tag on sale from today

The GI-tagged products of the state will be showcased at an exhibition-cum-sale in the city from Saturday.

Meanwhile, the state government is set to get Geographical Indications (GI) tag for ‘kala zeera’ and ‘chulli oil’, which is under final stages of registration. Kunal Satyarthi, member secretary, Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology and Environment (HIMCOSTE), said the registration of ‘kala zeera’ and ‘chulli oil’ is under final stages of registration.

He said to promote these initiatives, HIMCOSTE, in collaboration with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, was organising a three-day exhibition-cum-sale of GI products of the state from January 5 to 7, 2019, at Indira Gandhi State Sports Complex.

The objective of the exhibition-cum-sale is to uplift producers and agriculturists through encouraging sale of original products of the state. The exhibitors are the authorised users of GIs of HP and local producers/ artisans from the rural areas of the state, Stayarthi added

The state government had notified a policy for registration and protection of GIs of the state for which Himachal Pradesh Patent Information Centre (HP PIC) has been set up.

HIMCOSTE has been able to obtain GI tags for Kullu shawl, Kangra tea, Kinnauri shawl, Kangra painting and Chamba rumal. The HP PIC has also been able to obtain GI authorised userships from about 200 local artisans/ producers of the above GIs.
