Solan, February 16

Students of Padmavati Nursing College at Nahan on Saturday took out a protest march demanding justice for a BSc (II-year) student who had attempted suicide on Friday evening.

The 20-year-old girl student suffered multiple fractures. Trouble started when the girl’s mobile phone was confiscated by the college authorities for using the phone beyond the prescribed hours. She was also directed not to visit the library as a disciplinary action following which jumped from the fourth floor of her hostel building.

Sirmaur Additional SP Virender Thakur said the girl jumped from the fourth floor, but got stuck in branches of a tree and later fell down. She was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mohali and her condition was stable. He said her parents were to visit the college on Monday in view of her indiscipline.

He said the girl had two mobile phones and she used to hand over only one phone to the authorities. She was taken to task for this mischief by the college principal who had received a complaint from other students.

A case under Sections 330 and 34 of the IPC had been registered against the college principal and others for voluntarily causing hurt to extort confession and further investigation was underway, said the ASP.

The protesting students demanded an inquiry into the incident. They alleged that the college management had delayed her treatment. The girl took the step after the college authorities tortured her, they alleged.
