Solan, December 13

Solan Deputy Commissioner Vinod Kumar on Tuesday said drug abuse was emerging as the biggest challenge for society  and there was an urgent need to create awareness on its ills.

He was addressing students and staff of various educational institutions at the launch of a drug-free campus programme organised in coordination with the Police Department.

“Apart from the curriculum, teachers should also disseminate information about the Indian culture and  our age-old traditions so as to inculcate some moral values in the younger generation,” he said.

Solan Superintendent of Police Madhusudan Sharma said the people should give information about drug peddlers and their support can help the police crack cases.

He said rehabilitation centres were being set up to bring drug addicts back in the mainstream and everyone’s support was required to make the drug-free campaign a success.

A group of five-six students would be constituted in each school to create awareness on drug abuse.

Dr Virender Mohan said it was imperative to recognise the initial symptoms of drug abusers and take preventive steps. Parents as well as the teachers should keep a watch on the changed behaviour of their wards like irritation, anger, persistent demand for money and coming home late.
