UNA, MAY 26

A ruthless father threw his two daughters into the Gobind Sagar reservoir of the Sutlej in Raipur village of Bangana sub division late last evening. Fortunately, the two were saved by a local youth, who was travelling in the same motor boat.

According to the police, Chamkaur Singh (40), a resident of Sadwan Beet near Jagraon in Ludhiana district, was returning with his family after paying obeisance at the Baba Balak Nath shrine. The family comprised Chamkaur’s wife, two daughters and a son, besides four members of his brother’s family.

They boarded a ferry to cross the lake between Lathiani and Raipur Maidan for their journey to Una. The boat also carried some more people.

DSP Ashok Verma said as per witnesses, midway into the deep waters, Chamkaur Singh first threw his 12-year-old daughter Harman into the lake and then hurled his five-year-old daughter.

A local youth Sunil Kumar, who was travelling on the boat, jumped into the lake and saved the two. The passengers on the motor boat immediately caught Chamkaur Singh. The family pleaded that Chamkaur was mentally not sound. The daughters also spoke in favour of their father and requested the people to let him go.

However, the matter reached the police, who launched an investigation. The family members failed to produce any documentary evidence of the accused’s mental illness. Their replies too were unsatisfactory.

Consequently, the police registered a case against Chamkaur Singh for attempting to kill his daughters. The DSP said Chamkaur Singh had been arrested.

It is reported that the accused runs two dairy product shops in Ludhiana and Jagraon.
