Hamirpur, October 2

Hamirpur will soon don a new look. The district administration is all set to beautify the town, besides providing better facilities to residents.

Deputy Commissioner Harikesh Meena said roads would be widened, footpaths constructed and encroachments removed.

Over 56 kiosks built along the highway near the bus stand are obstructing the road widening.

The government had built a commercial complex a few years ago, which is yet to be put to use. The Deputy Commissioner, along with officials of the Public Works, Electricity and Irrigation Departments, inspected the commercial complex and also explored the possibility of road widening. He directed the officials to shift the power and water supply lines before starting the work. Footpaths on both sides of the road between Devpal Chowk and the DC office will be constructed. The demarcation of government land has been done and encroachers have been told to vacate the area.

The Forest Department is yet to act against forest land encroachers despite having a report of the Revenue Department, it is learnt. Land in front of the Divisional Forest Officer’s office has also been encroached.

LC Bandna, DFO, said the drive to remove encroachments had been initiated, adding that the department had planned to plant ornamental trees on the forest land close to the DFO’s office.

The town is witnessing rapid development with a number of works like re-carpeting of the main road, plantation of ornamental trees, laying of paver blocks and shifting of power lines under way.

The DC said the Public Works Department had been directed to chalk out the road widening plan. Kiosk vendors would be rehabilitated, he added.
