Hamirpur, February 21

The town experienced heavy hailstorm and rain on Thursday, which brought the temperature down by several notches. The rain continued for hours and forced people to stay indoors.

Though life remained out of gear, farmers had a reason to smile as after many years the region has witnessed rain at this time of the year, re-kindling the hope for a better crop yield. Significantly, most of the cultivated land in the district is non-irrigated and a large number of farmers depend on rains.

Meanwhile, hailstorm lashed various villages of the district, including Salauni, Chabutra, Kot, Taunidevi, Bhoranj, Badsar and Galore.

YS Pathania, Deputy Director, Agriculture Department, said while rain was good for crops, hail too would not have any adverse affect as there was no flowering of the food or fruit crops. He advised farmers to not let water collect in their fields and make proper drains to have a better crop yield.—OC
