Shimla, March 4

The state government is committed to the welfare of unskilled workers and has increased their minimum wages to Rs 6,300 per month over the years. This was stated by the state spokesperson here today.

He said amendments had been made to the HP Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Rules, 1974, and the HP Minimum Wages Rules, 1978, whereby it was now mandatory for the industrial establishments and hydroelectric projects to issue identity cards to workers. These ID cards must be attested by the labour officer of the area concerned. He said the principal employer and contractors were legally bound to provide all dues to the workers. The spokesperson said wages were now deposited in the bank accounts of workers in order to prevent any kind of harassment.

For the convenience of the jobless youth, all 74 employment exchanges had been computerised, he added.
