KANGRA: Floodwater entered shops and houses and a bridge on the Kangra bypass was damaged following heavy rain in the region on late Wednesday evening.

Floodwater entered shops and houses and a bridge on the Kangra bypass was damaged following heavy rain in the region on late Wednesday evening.

Kangra Sub-Divisional Magistrate Shashi Pal Negi on Thursday said the bridge had been closed for traffic. He said the bridge had suffered extensive damage and would have to be reconstructed.

He said a culvert near Gupt Ganga chowk also washed away. It would take a week to reconstruct it.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate said Kangra town recorded 125.6 mm of rain, leaving most areas flooded. Water entered houses in the Vivekananda Vihar, Jogipura and Ambika Vihar localities.

Floodwater entered shops situated outside the bus stand. A mobile shop owner said he had suffered a loss of Rs 30 lakh.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate said losses worth lakhs were reported due to rain on Thursday.
