A leopard cub entered a house at Aghaar village near the Aghaar forest range in the district following a forest fire on Saturday.

The family initially mistook the cub to be a cat. The cub was one-month old. Villagers informed the Forest Range Officer who took the cub into custody.

There have been over 34 incidents of forest fires in the district this summer. The forest fires have caused a huge loss of flora and fauna in the district. Wildlife experts said the summer was the breeding time for most of the wild animals and effort should not only be to protect trees but also wildlife.

Preeti Bhandari, Divisional Forest Officer, here said the leopard cub that had entered a house at Aghaar village was under the care of the Forest Department. The cub was too young, so the department was trying to locate its mother so that it could be released. If the mother leopard was not found, it would be handed over to the wildlife wing of the department, she added.
