17-yr-old kho kho player drowns in river

MANDI: A 17-year-old student, Vijay Kumar, who was a native of Gharwasda village in Mandi district, drowned in the Jiuni river in Gohar block on Saturday afternoon.

A 17-year-old student, Vijay Kumar, who was a native of Gharwasda village in Mandi district, drowned in the Jiuni river in Gohar block on Saturday afternoon.

Sources said he had gone to the river to take a bath along with a few other students. However, while doing so, he slipped and drowned in the river.

Confirming the report, Gurdev Chand Sharma, Superintendent of Police, Mandi, said the student’s body was found floating on the river side.

He said Vijay was part of the district-level games that were underway at Gohar block.

Vijay was part of a kho-kho team enlisted in the the under-19 category.

A total of 750 players across the district are participating in the nine-day event which was inaugurated on September 5.

The Superintendent of Police said the victim was the student of Chowk School in Baldwara zone.

He said the teachers who were accompanying the student had been booked under Section 304 A of the IPC.

He said an investigation was underway and the police were looking into all aspects of the case.

The police said the body would be handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination.
