Campaigning is in its last leg and candidates are leaving no stone unturned to woo voters. Lalit Mohan spoke to BJP candidate from Kangra Kishan Kapoor to know his poll strategy and how he plans to deliver on his promises

Why should people vote for you?

I am seeking votes so that the Modi government comes back to power. The issue of national security is at the forefront. The way the Prime Minister has worked to strengthen the security of the country and given a befitting reply to Pakistan after Pulwama attack is commendable. I see Modi as a strong leader and someone who can safeguard the interests of the people.

What are the main poll issues you are harping on?

Kangra is a land of soldiers. There are about 60,000 serving and retired soldiers. Their families are concerned about the proposal in the Congress manifesto to repeal the Armed Forces Special Protection Act (AFSPA). The BJP, on the other hand, has worked for giving due honour to the soldiers in the country by implementing their pending demand — OROP. If elected, I would continue to work for the rights of the soldiers.

Why are you being accused of being arrogant by your political opponents?

I am a simple man, who has been into politics for over three decades. I am serving the people of Dharamsala as an MLA for the fifth time and the state as a minister for the third time. I am a straight-forward person and want officials to serve the people. For that, I may have pulled up some officials at times. Moreover, this arrogance tag has been given by Congress leaders. I am among a few ministers who is accessible to the people.

What you intend to do for Kangra if elected?

Kangra and Chamba districts have a vast potential for tourism promotion. Tourism can provide employment to the youth in Kangra. I will strive to improve the infrastructure for promotion of tourism in the area. Chamba district faces connectivity issues. The Modi government has already selected Chamba under the Aspiration District scheme and approved a grant of Rs 85 crore. I will ensure that the money is spent properly for the development of Chamba district. I will also try that a cement plant comes up in Chamba.
