The Ambala district administration has planned to motivate locals to adopt stray cattle. Ambala City and the Sadar zone of Ambala Cantonment were declared stray-cattle free in September 2017 but animals can still be seen roaming on interior roads and also near the National Highway No. 1, posing a threat to commuters.
Not only Ambala City and the Sadar zone of the cantonment but also Mullana and Naraingarh Assembly segments of the district have been facing the stray cattle problem. Fatal accidents involving stray cattle have happened in the recent past.
There are five registered gaushalas in Ambala City and the Sadar zone and all of them are already full.
Devender Jassal, president of Vande Matram Dal Haryana, says, “Not only people but also cattle get badly injured in accidents. There are no animal ambulances and special cranes to lift injured or dead animals. It is good that the administration is trying to motivate people but we will request it to shift stray cattle to forests so as to keep them away from roads. Not only cattle but also other animals should be kept off roads”.
Rohit Jain, president of District Bar Association, says, “Municipal corporation officials have been claiming that stray cattle are being shifted to gaushalas but animals can still be seen everywhere in Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment”.
Deputy Commissioner Sharandeep Kaur says, “The presence of stray cattle on roads is a matter of concern for us. Efforts are being made to make roads stray-cattle free. The gaushalas are already full and we have decided to motivate NGOs, private firms and local residents to adopt stray cattle. We will ask people to help the administration in making roads safer and stray-cattle free”.
